Sorry, with so many open source repos to maintain, this went off my radar. I'm going to triage some issues in Leaflet.heat this week and hopefully fix or clear up...
Not possible at the moment, but it shouldn't be too hard to customize by modifying the source.

Nice suggestion, I'll look into it — shouldn't be hard to implement. Just need to recalculate the radius on each zoom.
