Issue is still present after upgrading firefox to version 44.0.1 (in ubuntu trusty package notion: 44.0.1+build2-0ubuntu0.14.04.1)

Issue present on ms windows 10, too. Same firefox version 44.0.1. If further information is needed please tell me.

I also like option 2 (now) as overall user convenience seems higher. Moreover, devices still can offer global prefs (e.g. in your case span_type) that apply to all synaptic pathways...
