I'm running into this same issue and thought I'd add my findings. Specifying a non-gravatar default results in the avatar not being resized, even if you specify default rendering sizes...

I believe I am also running into this issue on CircleCI so wanted to add my debugging info in case it is useful or if the solution in the works...
