Is there any update on this? We're seeing the same error in our production logs. Is this something that can be safely ignored or does it need addressed?

Yeah I don't think the git client is responsible for "setting" the `target_branch`. I think that is a variable Gitlab is setting using some other property in the commit(?) details...
