I have identified this issue on our install as Varnish executing requests to the server (for ESI includes) like the follows: "GET /https:/domain.com/turpentine/esi/getBlock/method/esi/access/public/ttl/3600/hmac/{redacted}/data/{redacted}-/https:/domain.com/turpentine/esi/getBlock/method/esi/access/public/ttl/3600/hmac/{redacted}/data/{redacted}-/https:/domain.com/turpentine/esi/getBlock/method/esi/access/public/ttl/3600/hmac/{redacted}/data/{redacted}-/https:/domain.com/turpentine/esi/getBlock/method/esi/access/public/ttl/3600/hmac/{redacted}/data/{redacted}-/https:/domain.com/turpentine/esi/getBlock/method/esi/access/public/ttl/3600/hmac/{redacted}/data/{redacted}-/ HTTP/1.1" For obvious reasons, this doesn't work...
When I implemented my fix I also got redirection loops and traffic still from varnish - I agree with the above its a better idea to restart everything before testing....
