According to https://github.com/chef-partners/knife-vsphere/issues/26 that plugin (which is a lot more maintained) can also manage ESXi hosts. Consequently, perhaps https://www.chef.io/solutions/vmware/ should be updated to de-list this project.

Is there a way to make Knife Esx work with Windows machines and templates? Or is it restricted to linux VMs.

Hello, This plugins is fantastic, but i think one option is missing. By default your plugin creates virtual machines with E1000 nic, should be perfect if you can select VMXNET3...
