I suffer from the same behaviour, though it's not as bad as my editor crashing, instead it's `xdg-open` that fails due to `$XDG_DATA_DIRS` not pointing to the system `.desktop` files....

Reading all of the above has prompted me to try the branch `next-release` a bit more seriously this time. The one thing in my setup that doesn't work is [ddterm](https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/3780/ddterm/)....
