jonls is working on D-Bus support so thing like this can be done.

This has been implemented in some pull requests, but I do not know if they are mergeable anymore.

`pkill -USR1 '^redshift$'` toggles redshift on and off. You should be able to set up xbindkeys to run that command when the key is pressed.
