That is a relevant remark. Maybe there's no need of a port, just only to create categories: free and non-free software.
There were similar issues before... (#431, #652, #1894). Is there a way to have this implemented as a plugin, at least?
BTW, whether the file is using tabs or spaces, that can be displayed in the status line.

@johann-petrak, that's because of the X Server, which is a graphical server running locally to display all graphics on the screen. It also handles some peripherals (pointing device and keyboard)....
