Possible to store data outside the simpleStorage object?

Single root object also causes problems on mobile devices. Once the object grows large enough, (de)serializing gradually becomes slower and eventually crashes the browser (Safari on iPhone 6)

Replace deprecated Rails methods with newer counterparts.

Required for Rails 6.1+ compatibility. Is there something preventing this to be merged?
