Unfortunately, wtype needs the "virtual-keyboard-v1" protocol, which is not implemented in some popular display servers like mutter (for gnome). Perhaps ydotool would be more universal?

Hm, i think it can run without it. For example the debian version (admittedly rather outdated) can run without the daemon, generating the warning > ydotool: notice: ydotoold backend unavailable...
