yes, I made sure my .vimrc has only one Plug, that is vim-markdown, all lua files are syntax highlighted fine, but not within a markdown lua block: 

not really, default markdown(tpope's version) does not have such issues but it brings its own problem, e.g. fenced block code has to be pre-defined,etc.

currently using neither, seems coc-volar covers everything
