After a quick read it sounds as if OpenID is a subset of OAuth, which is a Authorization and not Authentication protocol. What is wrong with the existing SAML setup?...

Thanks for the explanation @varac - appreciate it! From my POV (which is extremely limited as maintainer) it shouldn't be the apps responsibility to be compatible with each possible authentication...
