Invalid pattern: '**' can only be an entire path component

I had the same issue! Downgrading to fsspec from 2023.10.0 to 2023.9.2 solved it for me. (env: python 3.11.7, datasets version: 2.15.0, Windows 10 22H2, Build 19045.4170) Thanks a lot!
