That doesn't seem quite right, are you sure you set your strip mode correctly (GRB vs RGB, etc...)?
It should take the default recording device, I’ve used it fine with line in though I may have had to set line in to be viewed as a microphone device...
Oh hmm, I haven’t tried that setup on RPI before only on windows so I’ll have to default to someone more knowledgeable on this one, unfortunately.

Did you install the dependencies as shown in the instructions?
Yes, please follow the instructions and install all the dependencies before trying to run it.
Sounds like PyAudio didn't install correctly then.
