I'm having the same issue on Void Linux running niri 25.05.1, but the cause seems to be unrelated. it looks like niri is trying to load gbm from `/usr/lib64/gbm/dri_gbm.so`, but...
actually, my bad. I had not installed all of the mesa drivers properly, after doing that niri works great
