The HPM format is a standard, but the spec isn't available for free. I'd have to dig in to see if there are any restrictions on implementing the spec.

Ah, good point. We could do this in petitboot userspace (to cover the petiboot environment too), but would need to ensure that the implementation doesn't allow for a hotplug race....
