Yeah, the scratch buffer is just for the "tape" seeking mechanism, so we don't need to allocate a buffer inside the function (or use humongous amount of stack).

You can shut down SoLoud and initialize it with a new one. Pretty heavy-handed, but it's not anything that's done often.
That is not a use case SoLoud was designed for.
Another option would be to make error codes negative as they are in several other systems.. but I'm tending towards returning 0 on error in this case.
