I'm still trying to familiarize myself with the MyPaint code and I definitely have more to learn about coding, but is there any advice on what would need to happen...

This is what I came up with:  The automatic setting will output something like `scrap_01-12-2022_001_a.ora` and the default is the same as before but can interpret `time.strftime` directives now.

noting for myself that there needs to be some kind of handler so that people's old settings get reformatted properly

As far as I can tell I covered what was necessary and tried to stay within the project's code style. I'll get my toolchain back up in case any issues...
