Personally, I commit mine git however this has risks such as weakening cryptography with multiple copies of the same file.

There's also git-crypt which uses GPG. I haven't used it, yet but looks promising. If you want I can create a proof of concept which is private file store oriented.

It would also be neat to have an "all of time" option to get a full user contribution history.

I saw that part of your comment. I like the idea of asteroid scanner. It still has a limited range and you're not guaranteed to scan everything if you don't...
