Thanks for reporting this constellation of issues. Do you have an idea for better terminology? I will address the documentation and overflow issues soon.

This sounds like a good feature. What do you mean by "promote"? Do you want all the docs built but only some of them indexed?

Digest checking is probably the solution here. We already have digests in resolution root values and import lists -- we just need to do a little set arithmetic.
