Maybe to keep it backwards compatible first check if the new topic exists and check if the old one exists and rename it to the new version.

Can you specify what exactly you mean by "hidden parameters"? If you share with me the log file, if possible, that would help me debugging the issue.
I have not checked these params, but probably there need to be other param changes that should be included in this PR.
