I note your point. I'm sad/disappointed to see that many enhancement/features get dismissed without discussion. But you're the project leaders, so I'll do with it.

I would add that this "mark as read" button would be immensely more useful if it could act like a toggle (i.e mark as read or unread dependong on how...
