Just writing pp_table to a file and pushing it back doesn't cause a crash just a short monitor flickering.
For your test: This pp_table is from an Asus GL702ZC laptop which has some peculiar speed restrictions and voltages. I don't know how representative it is of a 'regular' RX580...
It would seem that porting to SDL2 for UNIX at least would solve this problem, as it has some facilities to convert from scancodes to unicode built in.

There were some portability issues with the approach I don't quite recall (it's been a couple of years) I'll try to reverse engineer why ultimately this approach was chosen. :)
