I agree that option one would be better. Some formatters rely on options e.g. in pyproject.toml for configuration, and those would in general only be available on the remote machine....

I can do that - hopefully soon-ish.
There are also pretty good autodoc plugins now for mkdocs. Maybe that would work better for you. Feels like it has a lower barrier to entry. https://mkdocstrings.github.io/
