I get the same error message that I also get when I put it on the top of the file.
The [changelog](https://github.com/scientific-python/pytest-doctestplus/blob/57d68bed411af7c644d37bb570ead31cf8c00d9a/CHANGES.rst) lists this as a new feature in 1.4, so I didn't see any use in trying out older versions.
