Is there any precedent for this sort of thing with code fencing / rendering? How have other addressed it?

The file https://github.com/gregzuro/obsidian-kroki/blob/master/kroki-test.md is an example. If you make that a note, or copy that into one, they should all render. LMK how it goes.

I've tested this in Macos and the exported diagram is visible in the PDF just fine. I'll try ubuntu in a bit and let you know what I find.
