I don't believe it's the checksums. Both the md5 and sha256 checksums are generated by streaming the file. I've verified this in a small program which makes a tempFile copy...
There is enough work here to fully use all core eng capacity for several sprints. The estimate for any given sprint should reflect how much effort we want to invest...
Probably worth a step back to look at how far we've come and where we should set our sights next
