I have not tried this mode before. If you run `telnet localhost 5555` and then `status 3`, `state`, `load-stats`, what is the output?

How often are you updating? The openvpn server can only handle one concurrent connection to management interface IIUC.
Is there more than one client accessing the server?
@fedor-git can you try to apply d114d7959162a47eaf304688b1dc0eb05ead2b0c and see if that helps?
