The pip version may be relevant. I can reproduce your error on Linux if I use the version of pip (21.1.3) that shipped with Python 3.9.5. The error goes away...

Thanks for the very helpful response. With your hints I was able to write out the extra information in a new key/value in the .d.ts.json file instead of as comments....

I might suggest adding a 7.5.3 pin to setup.py right before committing these changes (which would update the pin). That way, we can always point pip users to a commit...
