There is nothing objectionable in the latest system version. You are not going to lose access to anything.

I'd avise to use `_alloca()` (which uses stack space and is automatically freed upon return) instead of `new` or `malloc()` for the temporary SAFEARRAYBOUND and LONG allocations.
