Running GCMAIL interactively (each time I've tried) seems to have no issues. It reads the .mail. directory and checks each entry for the FN1 of OSTATS, then does some checks...

Ah. It appears to die on a .lose, because of the non-existence of a .BULK. directory. I guess this is a reasonable reason for failure.

But I don't really know why this didn't fail for me when I ran it interactively.....

What do you mean by a signal handler? How would the updated emulator "signal" to ITS? Would it generate an interrupt or fault? And wouldn't we have to add support...
