I'm fully in favor of a nearest-possible-color fallback in case of limited-color terminals, in case it helps.
I'd be open to a qualified maintainer taking the reins. I don't use it for anything right now and have little time to devote to it.
Probably model it as a context manager, so we're sure to restore the terminal flags.
Conway would even be a good place to demo it. Have a keystroke seed stable patterns or something. Or make it fully interactive, a la After Dark. ;-)
