yup, this scopes it down. mostly it's questions about options and flags, particularly when folks are using this via env-vars and won't use options/flags at all.

looks like [Stebalien/xattr](https://github.com/Stebalien/xattr) has a crate with extended attr functionality... and platform support looks restricted to macos, linux, and bsd. I'd like to take a stab at this!

I agree @dims, and there are some makefile tweaks and a ./hack/provenance buildx test script. Happy to be the code mover if someone can handle the secret provisioning that will...
