Check you MySQL encoding. Emojis shoudn't be replaced with a ? Here's the result for pgsql:

Oh yes fun, MySQL doesn't support emojis in key and indexes

So, I don't have time to dive in the MySQL things, if you find a way to allow MySQL indexes to contain emojis I'm all hear.
