I think #4135 should go in before this one, so I can simplify the code [here](https://github.com/mfem/mfem/pull/4054/files#diff-48a42a5cacaca9db0b3d637189a22c1f97c2f6b43eb88190af3382ca1cb39b1eR241-R250).
