how does a new member sign up?

I've got refinerycms_membership installed .. but I just don't get how a new member signs up? Any help here, or maybe an addition to the README would be a big...

undefined method `send_sms' for SMSNotifier:Class

Even tho I've set up: sms_fu = SMSFu::Client.configure(:delivery => :action_mailer) sms_notifier.rb isn't loaded so Rails cannot find send_sms. It seems to me that this gem is not properly set up...

This is reproducible; originally reported as bug to Ruby 2.2.1 ( https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/11306 ). But their recommendation is for changes to cups.c (shown below as the first comment to this issue)....
