@bberak this doesn't look too bad, merging this shouldn't cause issues with backwards compatibility. What would you say about rewriting the lib with typescript? It wouldn't be necessary to maintain...

I'd recommend to just keep track of `gtm_id` and check if it was previously used before initialising it again
