Without `tcpdump` it will be hard to figure out what happened, could you run `tcpdump` on your public facing interface and see what caused the RST?

Not sure how VMWare's NAT mode works, but yes Phantun can only work without an intermediate TCP stack running in the middle. Glad it is sorted out.
