Unfortunately @embray 's gappy is bitrotting and unfinished. I'll be looking at fixing SageMath's "old" libgap interface, as soon as there is GAP close enough to a release.
And it was there all the time since HPC-GAP appearance? By the way, one can also use C++'s `thread_local` and compile with a C++ compiler.
