This bug seems to be active since 2006 (?)[[link](https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=377548)].
This branch[[link](https://github.com/hfuchs/usbmount/tree/hfuchs.377548)] from the original thread in the above comment seems to address the issue with no ill-effects - caveat, only quickly tested it.
