Have you tested that this causes no issues with different unicode handling in python 3 compared to 2?

In my experience python2 to python3 conversions are not that easy because of the way strings are handled.

Actually I'm not sure if most mappers would appreciate this change.

@sploiselle I was trying to run all the existing tests with RTR for Kafka enabled, but most tests then fail with `ERROR: real-time recency unavailable for some sources in query`....

Since RTR is now merged, doing another test run.
