So if you have a tracks layer for every other type of layer you could end up with 2x the layers ? eg ships and ships_tracks, planes and planes_tracks, etc...

Thinking about it - it's a fairly simple option to add to the tracks node - to let the user select the behaviour... - as-is, a single "tracks" layer, or...
