Yea I borrowed heavily from [Material UI's](http://callemall.github.io/material-ui/#/components/date-picker) React version. Ironically, I've since moved away from Polymer to React, but if this component is useful I'm happy to keep it up....
That was a big thing for me too...I fell in love with Material/Paper design patterns with Polymer. Then I learned how easy it was to reimplement it in React. Then...
