Hmm. I think what we want is a way to define hitboxes, say which items should be considered against each other (a layer number maybe?), and some sort of efficient...
Also, using Box2D could totally work. I was mostly thinking that it's nice how simple the API is right now and expanding that footprint the minimal amount has merit?
