XQuartz solved the problem on Mavericks for me too.

I am not sure if just changing the return value would help here. Ideally when I use errorsource middleware or htpp client I would like error source to be handled...

I have the same issue, it works for some time and then gets stuck in "Next break in less than a minute" state.
