I would experiment with LinkFinder.start_element() in linkcheck/htmlutil/linkparse.py.
I think this is a Scintilla issue https://sourceforge.net/p/scintilla/bugs/2227/.
Turns out this is a fix for a problem introduced by eaa538c814f31ad8 and reported as part of #434. Confirmed by reverting that commit. Therefore, no option and no documentation required....
