I hit this problem as well and have a slightly different workaround. Instead of typing directly I put the emoji in the clipboard and then use ctrl+V to paste that...

You can fix up the syntax highlighting with `:set syntax=yaml`

I just installed it and it looks to be still working. But I did need to force the filetype with `set filetype=home-assistant` `set syntax=yaml`
