I did check some more and indeed, normally you shouldn't have both containers so I suppose it is possible to check for that.
While enabling contact sync we don't have any indication of progress and you can enable the sync twice if it takes a while. We should address it later though.

The reason there is that the type of the event is detected incorrectly and I think the reason is the same
This is currently by design because of restrictions on who can send calendar event updates. We will address it in the future one way or another.
