As a workaround, you can move your cursor around until it shows up on an external display. But I agree this is not ideal, and can confirm the behavior.
I'm against adding GSettings explicitly for secret settings, since it requires extra work for something we'd be explicitly not adding as a feature. And since it wouldn't be a configurable...

Why have a manual sync button instead of just having Calendar ensure it's up to date more often? i.e. can we just have Calendar check if it's up to date...
